Tips for the Brand New CEO
Tips for the Brand New CEO TIPS FOR THE BRAND NEW CEO Becoming CEO of a company can be a daunting yet exciting reality, especially if itâs your first time in the role. It can be challenging for anyone, even for those with years of experience. But, even more so for someone whoâs been thrust into their new title as CEO. I spoke with Brian Onorio, the CEO of full-service digital marketing agency Walk West, who reflects on his days of being a young CEO and the challenges heâs faced along the way. âWhile Walk West has been a functioning agency since 2007, being the CEO of a one-person outfit is a title by default,â said Onorio. âThatâs not taking anything away from the brave entrepreneurs who face the stormy waters of living the work-for-yourself dream, but with scale comes hurdles.â Onorio elaborated, â2015 was a breakout year for Walk West as we went from two employees to 10 and 2016 saw us grow from 10 to 34. In a sense, I feel like a brand new CEO in charge of a fast-moving machine. And with momentum â" expect turbulence.â To help run your âfast-moving machine,â Onorio shares his top five tips for brand new CEOs. 1 Replace Yourself for Long-Term Growth If you find yourself in the âfew employeesâ category, your mission should be to identify the talent that will help you replace your day-to-day activities. Being behind a computer screen is a recipe for stagnation and plateau. Itâs true that the new CEO finds that they will wear a lot of hats. Your job is to start taking a few off. Youâre the best salesperson your business has. If youâre too busy working in the business instead of working on the business â" and without a dedication to sales, youâll likely hold steady with minimal growth. 2 Understand Growth and Profitability, and When Those Metrics Are Important Revenue and profitability are the two metrics youâre likely to measure your success by. Growth without profitability and profitability without growth can find you on a stagnate path. In our early phase, profitability took a backseat to growth. There was rarely a reasonable project we wouldnât take on. That doesnât mean profitability isnât important, but achieving a high profit margin in early-phase growth means you probably didnât make the few investments that you probably should have. While in growth mode, plan on reinvesting your profits into things that can make growth even more explosive the next year. That may mean an additional sales person or a piece of software that can automate critical services. When you mature in growth, then turn the knobs for sustainable profitability. 3 Get an Advisor and Mentor Being a relatively young CEO throughout my twenties and into my thirties, I found myself on an island without places to turn for advice when I struggled with a business problem. No one in my personal network was facing the issues I was. Our growth kicked into high gear when I welcomed an advisor and investor in 2015 who had a stellar career in growing service-based companies. It was the difference maker in turning a lifestyle business into an agency. It also added a layer of accountability that I didnât have before. Although I was accountable to myself, having accountability from a different perspective shines the light on opportunities that you might be too myopic to notice. 4 Get Rid of the 5-Year Plan Five-Year Plans? Throw them out. Concentrate on the current year and do the things you need to do right now to make 2017 a success. If youâve written a 5-year plan, when was the last time you looked at it or referenced it? That doesnât mean that you get away without setting goals. But set achievable goals for this year and those goals for the new CEO should be growth driven. 5 Diversify in a Meaningful Way If youâre a new CEO with a small team, look around you and understand the complimentary services or features that you donât have that could provide you a strengthened unique proposition or revenue stream. While we spent years as website design and development specialists, we started growing only when we could swim upstream from a project and help set the strategy that defined what that project would become. We picked up service line offerings in SEO, paid advertising, social media, and video production. These all complement our goals of successfully marketing our clientsâ products and services. When you do diversify your services, keep it related to your core mission. Depart at your own peril you risk diluting the things that you do well when you venture too far from the nest. Tough (Question) Tuesday Whats your word for 2012
Extreme (Question) Tuesday Whats your assertion for 2012 My Essential Checklist by This is It Im somewhat torn on picking a word for the year. I did this last year just because, yet before the year's over (center of the year? Walk?) I had overlooked it. Yet, thinking about my boob malignant growth and the way that I need to step away a piece from Making Aggressive Goals in 2012 just in light of the fact that I still dont recognize what the years going to resemble and what Im going to have the capacity to do I imagined that Picking a Word would be a pleasant substitute. Sick likewise be making a Right Brain Business Plan Card for my promise, and taping it right to my PC screen (Id use it as my advanced backdrop, however nothing replaces the scene pic from our wedding) until I feel it in my bones. My statement? It came effectively this year. Its CARE. Whats your statement for 2012? Why? What's more, in what manner will you make sure to hear it out? (Alright, I know that is 3 inquiries, yet think about the last 2 as Optional Yet Encouraged) -

Unlock Your True Potential with These 3 Keys
Unlock Your True Potential with These 3 Keys Unlock Your True Potential with These 3 Keys Listen to Podcast Now: Listen in iTunes Download Audio File SUMMARY Unlock Your True Potential with These 3 Keys Have you ever wondered how to unlock your true potential? Most people focus on igniting the wrong things. What if you knew how to enhance the three keysâ"that already exist within youâ"to reach the level of happiness and success you want? Here they are: Share yourself. Sharing your own story connects you to the rest of the world. Sharing what you learned and how you were transformed benefits others even if they might do it differently. Be yourself. This is what keeps you connected to you. There is no greater struggle than when what you think, say, and do are not in complete harmony. Think about those times you felt out of sync or not yourself. What was missing? Likely, it was that congruence. Give Yourself. This is what connects you to higher powers. It also, oddly, provides the greatest return. This starts with contributing your efforts fully to what youâre going to do and give to the rest of this world. This is giving everything you have to that calling. Giving yourselfâ"which yields the highest resultsâ"requires four components/characteristic: Strategy: You have a strategy for where youâre going in life. You seek an understanding of why the world works the way it does in this area. You question everything. You take nothing at face value. Mindset: You maintain a particular mindset. You understand limitations are something of the mind, not the universe. Practice: Once you have your strategy and no-limits mindset in place, you practice to perfection. By practice, I donât mean brute force. Brute force or mindlessly working hard will never overcome intellectual laziness. You practice with an extreme sense of deliberation. You practice your craft well past the point of being able to do it perfectly. You practice it to the point you couldnât possibly make a mistake because you are so dialed in. Discomfort: You seem to live in a continual state of discomfort. Of course, Iâm not talking about living in pain, but continually pushing yourself so that every day youâre a bit uncomfortable because youâre constantly trying new activities and undertaking new projects that progress you. You embrace this discomfort because you know it will make you a great pioneer. Listen the rest of the podcast for complete instruction on unlocking your true potential! TRANSCRIPT Lately, to the dismay of my family, friends, and staff, Iâve been working when Iâm not sleeping. I take breaks here and there to eat and exercise. Of course, there are the vicious hide-and-seek bouts with the dogs too. This weekend, Iâm using the time to get more work done. This isnât a complaint because itâs my choice. This choice got me thinking about priorities and what my work means to you. As I took a quick break, my thoughts ran to what Iâve learned over the years and what I consider the most important aspects to success. More importantly, I thought about what I need to doâ"or anyone needs to doâ"to be supremely happy and successful. It boils down to three keys. So today, Iâd like to talk about those three keys to help you get dialed in to living a fulfilled life. Share Yourself. Iâm not speaking of your time or energy. I mean share your story with others. The art of sharing your own story is what connects you to the rest of the world. I donât mean sharing in a selfish, narcissistic way. I mean vulnerably sharing the key transformations in your life, so others can benefit from your experience. When you do this, people identify with their own, similar struggles. As you share what you learned and how you were transformed, they benefit from your experience even if they might do it differently. The big trick here is to make sure you share how you were transformed. If you donât offer up that most critical lesson, your story is simply a dead end for them from a learning standpoint. Whatâs more, you donât achieve that connection. Be Yourself. This is what keeps you connected to you. There is no greater struggle than when what you think, say, and do are not in complete harmony. Think about those times you felt out of sync or not yourself. What was missing? Likely, it was that congruence. Being yourself puts you in the best position to offer your greatest gifts to the worldâ"whatever they are. Itâs also the best way to ensure your own happiness and sanity. Give Yourself. This is what connects you to higher powers. It also, oddly, provides the greatest return. Iâm not speaking of being generous with your money or time. Many people donate those. Iâm referring to fully giving yourself to your purpose. (See 7 Signs You Found Your Purpose and How to Figure Out Your Purpose in Life in Fewer Than 600 Words.) This starts with contributing your efforts fully to what youâre going to do and give to the rest of this world. This is giving everything you have to that calling. Iâd like to spend time on this one because this is what truly unlocks the world for you. Of course, the greatest reward usually requires the greatest sacrifice. This will be lonely and painful. Itâll be lonely because people wonât understand you. They wonât understand what drives you. They wonât understand why youâd want to work so hard. Itâll be painful because the farther you advance, the less people available in this world who can help you. Youâre in a territory so few have been. Thatâs why the most brilliant ideas have such lonely childhoods. There is a terrible secret no one ever tells you about becoming successful. The greater your successes, the moreâ"not lessâ"you need to do by yourself to stay ahead. So, when I said âthisâ will be lonely and painful, what did I mean by âthis?â There are essentially four characteristics: Strategy: You have a strategy for where youâre going in life. Thatâs the huge difference between someone whoâs good and someone whoâs a master at their craft. The good ones take a break when they finally get it right. The greatest ones take a break when they canât possibly get it wrong. Hereâs a quick example: If you want to be a great salesman of whatever your product is, you donât simply learn how to sell that product or service. Most people can do that. No, youâre giving yourself to your purpose and your trade. You learn the sales techniques. You learn the psychology behind why people do what they do or buy what they buy. You use the products so you see can see them in practice. You break âem on purpose to see what people struggle with. You become empathetic for those customers. You go back to the design teams to show them whatâs happening. You learn everything there is to know about your productâs industry. You learn everything there is to know about the customers. You become an industryâ"leading expert on the products, topics, and trend. You become a pioneer to advance your industry and the world. This evolution it what truly unlocks the world to release itâs greatest gifts and allows you to give your greatest gifts to others. To recap: Share yourself. This is what connects you to others. Be yourself. This is what keeps you connected to you and keeps you the best you. Give yourself. Give yourself to your purpose by going well beyond the basics because thatâs what unlocks the greatest gifts. As always, thereâs a lot more material on this subject on my Tips for Work and Life Blog at www.andrewlacivita.com. Check it out and weâll see ya next week!

Redundancy cover letter template
Redundancy cover letter template by Michael Cheary Sometimes, a job doesnât always work out the way weâd hoped. If youâve recently been made redundant, finding the right role to re-enter the workforce can be daunting. And, if itâs been a while since youâve written a CV or cover letter, the idea of starting again can be an even greater cause for concern.Weâve already focussed on how to write the perfect CV after redundancy. But being as your cover letter is the first impression a recruiter will get of your application, itâs just as crucial to get this right. If you think you know the basics of how to write a cover letter, but want some more tailored advice, look no further. Hereâs our cover letter template specifically designed for people who have been made redundant.Just here for the template? Click the link below: Redundancy Cover Letter Template Email address: Please enter a valid email addressmessage here By clicking Submit, you accept our Terms & Conditions and consent to receive emails and career related topics. See our Privacy policy for details. Continue without submitting Download Redundancy Cover Letter TemplateOpening the letterThe opening paragraph should be concise and to the point. Simply explain what job it is youâre applying for, and where you found the vacancy.Feel free to mention your source by name (e.g. as advertised on reed.co.uk) or, if someone referred you to the contact, mention their name in this section.Example: I wish to apply for the role of Retail Manager, currently being advertised on reed.co.uk. Please find enclosed my CV for your consideration.Second paragraph Why are you suitable for the job?Briefly describe your most relevant professional and academic achievements to help sell your suitability. If you have no specific academic or vocational qualifications to cite, focus on your relevant experience within the industry or use personal skills or attributes to show what makes you the perfect fit f or the role. For a list of desired skills you could include, always check the job description carefully before writing your cover letter.Example: As you can see from my attached CV, I have over ten yearsâ experience in the retail industry, and I believe my extensive knowledge of the sector and sales skills built up during this time make me the perfect candidate for the role.Third paragraph â" Explain the circumstances of your redundancy The third paragraph is your opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding your redundancy. If you have been out of work for a relatively short period of time, however, you neednât dwell too much on the reasons. Keep it as succinct as possible, unless you feel more context is necessary.Example: Unfortunately, I was recently made redundant after seven years with the business, due to company closure. However, as the key achievements during my employment will demonstrate, this was in no way a reflection of my own work, and I see this as the pe rfect position to re-enter the industry. Fourth/Fifth paragraph â" What can you do for the company?Once youâve explained your redundancy, use practical examples to emphasise what you can do for the business and place prominence back on the positives.Focusing on your performance during your previous position in this section is a great way to reinforce your credentials (regardless of the reason for redundancy), but references to your academic career can also be used here.Always make sure your examples are as quantifiable as possible. âIncreased revenue by x%â, for instance, sounds a lot more impressive than simply stating you âIncreased revenueâ.Other examples could include outlining your dissertation (e.g. âachieved a first class distinction grade in my dissertation on xâ), or more quantifiable achievements you may have attained whilst in previous positions (e.g. âincreased staff retention by x% during my time in employmentâ, âan increase in studentsâ grades by xâ etc.)Example: The position particularly interests me because of my passion for the fashion industry. In my previous role, I was responsible for managing the companyâs flagship store, which was one of the biggest fashion outlets in the South East. I progressed to this position within the company after working as an Assistant Manager for two years at a smaller store.I successfully managed the flagship store for a period of five years, which was also the top performing store in the region. Aside from hitting over 100% of revenue target in four of my five years with the business, Iâm also particularly proud of the low staff turnover rate, which was at the lowest level of all our UK outlets and improved by 50% during my time as manager.Fifth paragraph â" ReiterateHereâs where you reiterate your interest in the role and why you would be the right fit for the company.Example: I am confident that I can bring this level of expertise with me to your organisation and help Onlin e Retail Company LTD build upon their reputation as one of the biggest fashion brands in the UK. I am available to start immediately.Closing the letterThank the employer for their time. It is also a good opportunity to indicate youâd like to meet with the employer for an interview.Sign off your cover letter with âYours sincerelyâ (if you know the name of the hiring manager)/âYours faithfullyâ (if you do not), and your name.Example:Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss my application further. Yours sincerely, [Your name] Final thoughtsRemember: Just as with our standard free cover letter template, this is a template, not a ready-made cover letter. Without the proper research into the company advertising the vacancy, and without tailoring it to the role, it will lack the impact for which a cover letter can drastically improve your chances of reaching the interview stage. The most important thing to remember here is that youâ re not afraid to acknowledge your redundancy. It is not a reflection of your work, and you should never start doubting yourself when writing your cover letter.Instead, place precedence on the positives and assure the employer that youâre ready for your next challenge.Still searching for your perfect position?
